How the internet has helped us to communicate

Where would we be if the internet had never evolved? I like to ponder about what if the internet had never evolved

would we be at a disadvantage today? By disadvantage I am talking about communication with other people around the globe. As we all know from the past if we wanted to talk to family from far way it was either with taking the time to write a letter or perhaps calling on the phone. Now calling on the phone if they were in another country was pretty expensive and yet you weren’t able to talk too long because of long distance charges. We could also write up a letter and send it which would take quite a few days before it arrived. Or sometimes the mail system wasn’t as sophisticated and a letter could get lost and never show up. Now with the internet evolved there are certainly many ways that we can communicate whether it is with family, friends or coworkers. There are a few different methods that I will name that now allows us to keep in touch with whether it is a loved one, friends, coworkers, acquaintances or meeting someone new.

Social Media

Do you remember back when you were in middle school or high school for those of us who didn’t have computers quite yet. Our social media was passing around notes to each other in classroom  or perhaps writing a letter to someone. Who can remember when beepers came out and you were able to type a couple of words if the other person understood. Once the internet had come to life there were chatroom’s from around the world where you could talk to people live. Some of the most popular chat rooms during the early years of the internet were yahoo chat rooms. Another one, MSN chat was popular back than.

Fast forward we are now living in a world of constant connection whether you’re at home or on the road or at work. One of the most popular social media sites is non other than Facebook. This has certainly been an advantage for families who live in other countries and may not have any means to use a phone. This is also useful to look up old high school mates or friends that you haven’t heard from in a while. Another social media site, is LinkedIn especially for the business side of communication. This site is mainly used for networking with other professionals whether locally or globally that have the same interest. There are plenty of advantages with dealing with social media in the right time. Now if you’re constantly hanging out in these social media sites when perhaps you should be paying attention to your significant other or parents perhaps it’s time to rethink about your relationship with the internet.

Online Dating

Here is another popular way that has helped us to find a date or perhaps a relationship through the internet. It has become quite common nowadays to seek out someone through online dating sites. For some people it is easier to setup a profile to start that search rather than no one coming up and talking to him or her. Some people perhaps could be shy not knowing what to expect if someone tries to take that chance and have small talk. Or when in person a guy or girl may fear rejection when not taking a chance to talk to a certain person. Some people may also feel intimidated to walk up to someone to start a conversation. With online dating perhaps the fear of rejection goes away because if one feels that a certain person is not responding than they can proceed to their next interest. With online dating you have many choices to choose from when going through profiles to see who could be a possible match. Without prior knowledge of any individuals interests, could be an awkward situation because many things that one person may like the other person may not like.

With the birth of the internet has certainly revolutionized the way we communicate on a daily basis. Now whether it is for better or worse that is certainly up to the individual. However, no one can deny that it has certainly helped him or her to research information, communicate with family, meet that special someone or send a letter through email.
